Distance Markings. RoG Definitions; Obstructions. Local rule/Condition of competition. Revised 2014-10-23.
In depth: If the Committee decides to use distance markings the Swedish Golf Federation (SGF) suggests the following markings to indicate the distance to the centre of the green: White plates (200 meters), yellow plates (150 meters) and red plates (100 meters). Plates which indicate other distances ought to have that distance displayed on the plates.
The Committee may also use stakes to indicate the distance to the centre of the green: Yellow-black (150 meters) and red-black (100 meters).
Under Rule 24-2 a player is not entitled to relief from a distance marker on his line of play and for safety reasons it might be advisable for the Committee to declare the stakes as movable obstructions
in which case Rule 24-1 applies.
If the Committee uses non standard stakes (e.g. shaped as a beacon, a sailing-mark, a lollipop, a large safety-match or stakes with advertisements) it ought to be mentioned in the local rule.

The Committee may use bushes, stones or trees, which are an integral part of the course, as distance markers. If such a distance marker is without a colour-code under the recommendations of the SGF, the local rule should name the specific plant and the distance to the centre of the green (suggested wording below).

Note that if the Committee uses movable distance markers, under RoG; Definitions; Movable obstructions, a player may remove a stake without penalty. The player may take relief from the artificial base of such a distance marker either under Rule 24-2 for a concrete base or a pipe (immovable obstructions) or under Rule 25 for a hole in the ground made by a green-keeper (ground under repair).
